Our hands are incredibly complex and precise instruments, capable of far more than we often realize. Hands allow us to interact with the world on an energetic level, are associated with the act of giving and receiving and to the surprise of many, hold an innate healing power that has been used for centuries for healing various ailments.

How Do Our Hands Work?

The Energy processors

While many are familiar with the concept of energy centers along the spine (chakras), fewer know that numerous other energy centers exist throughout the body, including the hands. In fact, there are over 30 chakras located in our hands. The most prominent are located in the center of each palm, while others reside at each joint and fingertip. These energy points make our hands particularly suited for energy sourcing, channeling, and healing.

Through our hands, we can receive energy, assess its quality, and send it back out. Remarkably, anyone can learn to harness this potential for enhancing life quality, personal growth, and healing.

The Energetic Meaning of Each Finger

Each finger is associated with specific body parts, elements, and energetic properties. Understanding these connections can offer insight into our emotional and physical well-being:

Thumb

  • Element: Fire
  • Meridian: Lung
  • Symbolism: Motivation and willpower

The thumb’s fiery energy can transform excess energy from other fingers while nourishing the body’s elemental balance.

Index Finger

  • Element: Air
  • Meridian: Large intestine and stomach, also the heart
  • Symbolism: Confidence, reflection, intuition, balance and serenity

Index finger energy can help us connect with our instinct and ability to reflect. Since the air element represents the mind, we can harness index finger energy to organize and calm thoughts during meditation.

Middle Finger

  • Element: Ether
  • Meridian: Throat and gallbladder
  • Symbolism: Drive, joy, and risk-taking

Known as the “heavenly finger,” its energy is believed to radiate into infinity. Middle finger energy can be harnessed to find drive, eliminate fear of risk and spark joy in taking action.

Ring Finger

  • Element: Earth
  • Meridian: Liver
  • Symbolism: Creativity, inspiration and grounding

Linked to the root chakra, it represents stamina, feelings of safety and security, and gives the inspiration to manifest ideas.

Little Finger

  • Element: Water
  • Meridian: Heart
  • Symbolism: Emotions and happiness

This finger reflects our emotional state and the ability to connect deeply with others.

Male and Female Energies. Duality

Day and Night, Light and Dark, Expansion and Contraction, Hot and Cold, Thought and Emotion, Order and Chaos, Yin and Yang… These are all projections of this duality in Nature.

People are also dual by nature. We all have male and female energy within us, at different ratios, also each side of the human body is considered to carry male or female forces present in nature:

  • Male energy is like a straight line. It moves outward, gives and secures.
  • Female energy is like a circle. It moves inward, receives and nurtures.

When both of these energies dance together, the spiral of energy is formed, which goes upward, grows and thrives.

The left side of the body is more female, while the right side is more male energetically.

Also the mental aspect of people is mainly driven by male energy and the emotional aspect is mainly driven by female energy.

Only the brain is sort of in reverse, where the left side of the brain is considered more male and analytical, involved in language and logical reasoning, while the right side is more female and artistic, involved in emotional processing:

Our hands, like the rest of our body, embody these male and female energies in the same manner:

Left Hand: Represents female energy, emotional balance — receptive, nurturing, and connected to the inner emotional world.

Right Hand: Represents male energy — outward-focused, giving, and intellectual.

These energies influence our emotional and mental balance. For instance, the left hand relates to self-trust and inner balance, while the right hand reflects how we project those emotions externally.

Understanding Signals from Your Hands

Each hand and finger carries emotional and physical connections:

Little Finger:
Left: Spirituality and growth
Right: Personal and influential power one has upon others and the world

Ring Finger:
Left: Inspiration, inner spark that awakens our inner fire
Right: Creative expression, ability of connecting different ideas together and bringing them to life

Middle Finger:
Left: Concentration, level of concentration
Right: Focus, the strength of our concentration

Index Finger:
Left: Inner confidence, self trust
Right: Leadership, the ability to make others to trust and follow oneself

Thumb:
Left: Motivation, ability to gather it from within
Right: Willpower, ability to create action from the inner motivation

Here is a more detailed image of every aspect that each of the fingers on both hands represents:

When you experience discomfort, numbness, or pain in specific areas of your hands, it can serve as a signal to explore deeper energetic or emotional imbalances.

How to Activate the Healing Potential of Your Hands

Healthy hands means that the majority of the energy centres are open and function well, which manifests as openness, creativity and confidence as you move through the world. Through healthy hands the energy easily flows both in and out.

Most of us, however, have some energetic blocks and imbalances as well as sabotaging habits that prevent us from accessing our full vitality and lead us to feeling exhausted, scattered, dull… even ill.

Signs that your hand chakras may be blocked or imbalanced

ON A PHYSICAL LEVEL:

  • Feeling of numbness in any part of your hands (on one or both hands)
  • Sore hands and / or fingers
  • Painful joints
  • Carpal syndrome

ON AN EMOTIONAL LEVEL:

  • A lack of creativity or inability to express yourself artistically
  • Feeling emotionally closed off or physically numb
  • Difficulty connecting with others or the world around you

All of these and other symptoms show there might be a dis-balance in giving and receiving, lack of connection with the world and with other people, lack of creativity and inability to express yourself artistically.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way and everyone has all the power to change that!

1. Water Therapy

Soak your hands in water, preferably a natural body of water such as a stream, lake or a sea, but a bowl of warm, salty water will do too. Visualize the water washing away blockages and replacing them with bright, flowing energy.

2. Energy Ball Exercise

Rub your palms together to generate warmth. Imagine a glow forming in the palms of your hands. Slowly separate them, now imagining a glowing ball of energy forming between your hands. Feel its warmth and vibrancy before drawing the energy back into your body for healing.

3. Art as Therapy

Engage in hands-on creative activities like painting, sculpting, or makeup application for that matter. These activities help first of all soften the grip, activate and harmonize your hand chakras for the creative energy to move freely through hands.

Balancing hand chakras may take time and consistent practice, but the good thing is that these exercises only take a few minutes a day.

Self-Healing Through Hand Positions

Healing involves receiving energy, assessing it, and channeling it effectively. These hand positions can balance your energy and improve overall well-being.

*Inspired by Reiki practices, but without the unnecessary intermediaries.

These hand positions cover essential body systems, organs and energy centres.

  • The body is organized into 5 main levels:
  1. Cellular Level: Individual cells with specific functions (e.g., muscle cells, nerve cells, blood cells).
  2. Tissue Level: Groups of similar cells working together (e.g., muscle tissue, nervous tissue).
  3. Organ Level: Different tissues forming a single functional unit (e.g., heart, liver, lungs).
  4. Organ System Level: Groups of organs working together (e.g., digestive system, respiratory system).
  5. Organism Level: The entire human body functioning as a whole.

Since every organ and system is composed of cells, which are the building blocks of all body systems, from time to time you can direct the healing energy from your hands to a cellular level, your cells.

  • There are 11 systems in our body, also connected to respective organs:
  1. Integumentary System: The integumentary system comprises the skin, hair, nails, and glands. It serves as a protective barrier against external threats, regulates body temperature, and houses sensory receptors for touch, pain, and pressure.
  2. Skeletal System: The skeletal system consists of bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. It provides support, protects internal organs, allows movement, and serves as a storehouse for minerals like calcium and phosphorus.
  3. Muscular System: The muscular system is responsible for body movement. It includes smooth, skeletal, and cardiac muscles. Muscles maintain posture, generate heat, and facilitate voluntary and involuntary movements.
  4. Nervous System: The nervous system is a complex network that includes the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It coordinates and controls bodily functions, relays messages through electrical impulses, and plays a vital role in sensory perception, motor control, and cognition.
  5. Cardiovascular System: The cardiovascular system, comprising the heart, blood vessels, and blood, transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body. It helps regulate body temperature, pH, and electrolyte balance and assists in immune system function.
  6. Lymphatic System: The lymphatic system is a network of lymph nodes, lymph vessels, and organs (such as the spleen and thymus). It aids in immunity by filtering and returning interstitial fluid to the bloodstream and transporting fatty acids from the digestive system.
  7. Respiratory System: The respiratory system encompasses the lungs, trachea, bronchi, and diaphragm. It facilitates the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the environment, serving as the body’s respiratory gas exchange system.
  8. Digestive System: The digestive system comprises various organs, including the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas. It processes and breaks down food into nutrients for absorption in the small intestine. This system also eliminates waste through defecation.
  9. Urinary System: The urinary system, consisting of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra, filters blood, removes waste products, regulates fluid balance, and assists in maintaining proper electrolyte levels and blood pressure.
  10. Endocrine System: The endocrine system comprises glands, such as the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, and reproductive glands. It produces hormones that regulate bodily functions, including growth, metabolism, reproduction, and development.
  11. Reproductive System: The reproductive system differs between males and females. It enables the production of gametes necessary for reproduction and includes structures such as the ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina, testes, seminal vesicles, prostate, and penis.

When practicing healing with hands, you can position your hands and direct your attention to each of the systems and organs, associated with this particular system.

  • There are seven outer levels or energetic layers beyond the physical body

In addition to the physical body, which consists of 5 main levels of organization and 11 organ systems, there are also subtle energy bodies or outer levels beyond the physical. These are often referred to as the ‘human energy field’ or ‘auric layers’:

  1. Etheric Body: closest to the physical body, it reflects vitality and life force.
  2. Emotional Body: connected to feelings and emotions.
  3. Mental Body – Associated with thoughts, beliefs, and cognitive processes.
  4. Astral Body – The bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, connected to relationships and higher emotions.
  5. Etheric Template Body – Holds the blueprint for the physical body’s perfect form.
  6. Celestial Body – Linked to intuition, divine love, and higher consciousness.
  7. Causal (Ketheric) Body – The outermost layer, connected to the soul, divine wisdom, and the universal consciousness.

These outer levels interact with the physical body through chakras and the energy meridians, influencing health, emotions, and spiritual growth. Keeping them balanced through meditation, energy healing, and mindful living enhances overall well-being.

  • Practice Tips

The usual practice is to keep hands in one position / on one spot for about 2-3 minutes, then move on to the next position. You can hold your hands at some spots for longer at some spots less, depending on which parts of your body you want to work on more and where you want to send more energy, like to those parts of your body where you either have pain, or where you know the problems are at the moment:

  1. When approaching healing by body systems and organs, imagine sending light and gratitude to the parts of your body where you are holding your hands.
  2. When approaching healing by energy centers (chakras), move your hands from top to bottom or from bottom to top, visualising the colours and energy flow through every chakra.
  3. Mix and improvise as you please

Begin with daily practice for 3 – 4 weeks, focusing on basic positions. Then you can keep on doing your hands practices 2 to 3 times per week. Adapt the positions intuitively based on your needs, trusting your inner guidance.

The more you practice, the more intuitively and creatively you can approach self-healing with hands and think of your own hand positions, there is no right or wrong. Only you are in charge of your body and can choose the best spots for your hands. Trust your intuition.

Important note: You don’t need special attunement to the Reiki system for these hand positions to work. You have everything you need at this very moment — your hands and your own inner energy. Positive attitude, faith in yourself and practice are some of the additional powers that can help you heal yourself with your hands faster and better.
